One of my recent Brand Starter Sessions was with Chris, the owner of Operation STR, a property management company for short term rentals.
Maryland branding photography sessions are always interesting because every business has a different story to tell. Chris came in with a clear vision of how he wanted to show up professionally, but he was also open to trying different ideas and approaches throughout the session. That combination usually leads to the strongest gallery, and this session was no exception.
One thing that made this session a little different for me is that I don't photograph men as often as I photograph women-owned businesses, families, or parent-child sessions. It was a fun change of pace and a great reminder that strong personal branding images are important for every business owner, regardless of industry.

From the beginning, our goal was variety.
When someone invests in branding photography, I want them to walk away with images that can work across multiple platforms and purposes. Website headers, LinkedIn profiles, speaking engagements, social media content, presentations, and marketing materials all require slightly different types of images.
We focused on creating a mix of polished headshots, approachable portraits, and images that felt professional without being overly formal. Chris was willing to experiment with different expressions, poses, and setups, which helped us create a gallery that feels both professional and approachable.

Last Friday was such a fun day.
I recently got to partner with Rachel of Rachel Organizes for the first-ever Founders Reset, a gathering of 16 female entrepreneurs who came together to step away from the day-to-day chaos of business ownership, connect, reset, and think a little bigger about what’s ahead.
And Rachel had a surprise planned, which was…US!
Valerie Hammer Makeup Artistry and I showed up to offer mini makeup touch-ups and fresh professional headshots, and the attendees had absolutely no idea.
As a Maryland headshot photographer, I talk to so many business owners who know they need updated photos, but keep putting it off because life is busy, business is busy, and being in front of a camera doesn’t exactly top everyone’s list of fun activities.
But this was the perfect opportunity, to “why not??”
People got to sit down, get a little pampered, laugh with Val, hop in front of my camera for a quick session (and yes, with a fan), and walk away with photos they could immediately use for their businesses.
And the energy around it was just so good.

One thing I hear all the time is, “I really need new headshots.” usually followed by, “I just haven’t gotten around to it.” And I get it.

As a Maryland branding photographer, I work with a lot of women who are wildly accomplished.
Therapists. Consultants. Entrepreneurs. Creatives. Business owners.
And despite all that experience, confidence, and expertise?
So many still hesitate when it comes to professional photos. Not because they don’t understand the value or because they can’t make the investment.
But because being visible feels vulnerable.

A Therapist’s Perspective on Visibility, Confidence, and the Inner Critic
Jen shared this after our branding session together:
There’s something inside each of us that can hold us back. Clinicians often refer to that negative internal voice as the ‘inner critic’: the stream of self-defeating thoughts that says, ‘You’re not good enough,’ or ‘You’re not capable.’
In psychoanalytic theory, Sigmund Freud described a related concept called the superego, the part of the psyche associated with internalized rules, self-judgment, and inhibition.
After 13 years of owning my own business as a psychotherapist, I finally worked up the courage to hire a photographer for professional headshots.
This was not difficult because of budget, timing, or logistics. It was difficult because, for many years, a part of me still felt like I was ‘playing’ business.

Why Photos Sometimes Feel “Off” (Even When You Know You Look Fine)
Ever feel like you look great in the mirror but completely different in photos? There’s a reason—and it has nothing to do with how you actually look. Here’s what’s really going on and why professional photography makes such a difference.
You’ve probably had this moment.
You walk past a mirror and think, that feels right.
Later, you see a photo from the same day and think… wait, what?
It’s confusing…annnnnnd a little frustrating. What am I doing wrong??
But it’s not because you suddenly looked different in that photo. What you’re reacting to is the gap between how you’re used to seeing yourself and how a camera records you.
Here’s what’s actually going on behind the scenes.
You’ve trained your brain to recognize one version of you
The version of you that feels most “normal” is the one you see every day. You usually view yourself in a mirror, you see quick glances, passing reflections.
That image is flipped.
So when you see a photo, you’re seeing a version of yourself that’s technically more accurate… but less familiar. Your features aren’t wrong. They’re just arranged in a way your brain doesn’t recognize as easily.
Even tiny differences can throw you off because you’re so used to seeing it the other way.
The camera changes things more than you think
Not all cameras (or lenses) see you the same way.
Your phone, for example, is designed to fit a lot into the frame. To do that, it uses a wider lens; which can stretch and shift proportions, especially when you’re close to it.
That’s why selfies can feel particularly harsh or just… not quite right.
When you are in a more controlled setup, there are tools that keep proportions closer to real life. It’s a quieter difference, but it’s one of the reasons some photos feel more like you than others; something I think about constantly as a Maryland branding photographer working with women who want to show up confidently and naturally.
You’re judging a frozen moment that wasn’t meant to be paused
In real life, no one experiences you as a still image.
They see the way you talk, react, laugh, move. Your expressions are constantly shifting, softening, changing.
A photo interrupts that flow and holds onto one tiny slice of time.
Sometimes that slice is perfect. Sometimes it’s mid-transition. And when you isolate it and stare at it, it can feel like it defines everything… even though it’s just one passing moment.
You’re closer to the image than anyone else
There’s also the simple fact that you’re looking at yourself differently than everyone else does.

A simple outfit change during a recent Silver Spring headshot session completely changed how her eyes looked. Here’s why color matters more than you think when planning your headshots.
I had a headshot session in my Silver Spring studio recently with Josie, and something really simple stood out.
She brought two outfits. A green jacket and a blue dress.
Same setup, same light, same background.
But her eyes looked completely different depending on what she was wearing.
With the green jacket, her eyes felt warmer, almost hazel.
With the blue dress, they looked brighter and way more blue.
Nothing else changed. Just the color near her face.
And it was one of those moments where you’re like… okay wait, this actually matters.
It’s Not Just About Picking Something “Nice”
When people are getting ready for headshots, especially here in the Silver Spring / DMV area where everyone is busy and just trying to get this checked off their list, the focus is usually:
“What looks good on me?”

Look at your eyes.
Then hold a couple different colors up near your face in natural light and just see what happens. You’ll notice it pretty quickly.
You don’t need to follow strict rules, but here’s a general way to think about it:
Colors similar to your eyes will create a softer, more blended look
Colors opposite your eyes will make them stand out more
Neither is “right,” it just depends on what you like.
Makeup also plays a HUGE role in knowing how to highlight the eyes. That’s why I offer sessions that include makeup so you have an expert figuring that part out!
