If You’ve Been Putting Off Branding Photos, You’re Not Alone

As a Maryland branding photographer, I work with a lot of women who are wildly accomplished.

Therapists. Consultants. Entrepreneurs. Creatives. Business owners.

And despite all that experience, confidence, and expertise?

So many still hesitate when it comes to professional photos. Not because they don’t understand the value or because they can’t make the investment.

But because being visible feels vulnerable.

Updating your website, showing your face online, or stepping into a more polished version of your business can stir up all kinds of thoughts:

That hesitation is incredibly normal.

A Therapist’s Perspective on Visibility, Confidence, and the Inner Critic

Jen shared this after our branding session together:

There’s something inside each of us that can hold us back. Clinicians often refer to that negative internal voice as the ‘inner critic’: the stream of self-defeating thoughts that says, ‘You’re not good enough,’ or ‘You’re not capable.’

In psychoanalytic theory, Sigmund Freud described a related concept called the superego, the part of the psyche associated with internalized rules, self-judgment, and inhibition.

After 13 years of owning my own business as a psychotherapist, I finally worked up the courage to hire a photographer for professional headshots.

This was not difficult because of budget, timing, or logistics. It was difficult because, for many years, a part of me still felt like I was ‘playing’ business.

I mean. Whew.

Branding Photos at GoodVets Silver Spring, MD

The GoodVets team in Silver Spring has a beautiful space, a great team, and one very unforgettable Doberman. Here’s a look inside our recent branding shoot at their new location.

GoodVets recently opened a new location in Silver Spring and I was lucky enough to photograph their team for a branding session. It was everything I love about working with small businesses — thoughtful design, a team that clearly enjoys their work, and the most adorable pet models!

The space is clean, modern, and full of personality. I love all the decor and simple design that makes it feel more homey and less clinical.

The staff made it easy to capture honest, natural moments. We moved through team interactions, client care setups, and a few quiet in-between moments that really show the people behind the practice. Everyone was kind, fun, and incredibly easy to work with.

The large Doberman was definitely a highlight. Huge, gentle, and clearly very loved. You’ll see him pop up a few times below — front and center, just the way he likes it.

We kept the focus on:

  • Real interactions with pets and clients

  • Team portraits in natural light

  • Interior shots that show off the space

  • Details that reflect the GoodVets brand

  • A few lighthearted moments with the pets and clinicians to show off the personality of the team

It’s always a win when a branding session feels less like a production and more like documenting what’s already working. GoodVets Silver Spring has built a beautiful clinic with a great team, and it was a pleasure to help capture it.
