Leveling Up with Holly: A Strategic, Soulful Brand Session

A behind-the-scenes look at Holly's empowering branding session for her business, Ladies Level Up. This shoot captures her bold blend of intuition, leadership, and authenticity to connect with modern, purpose-driven women.

When your client is also a dear friend and total powerhouse, something incredible tends to happen. Holly, founder of Ladies Level Up, is building something truly special: a space where smart, ambitious women can grow, connect, and evolve as leaders without losing their humanity in the process.

Holly came to her brand session with clarity, confidence, and a big vision: to visually communicate the multidimensional energy of her brand. Together, we mapped out a creative strategy that would bring her story to life in a way that felt polished, real, and unmistakably her.

A Visual Language for Soulful Leadership

The day unfolded in distinct phases, each one telling a chapter of Holly's story:

  • The Feminine Executive: Structured blazers, clean lines, and that effortless look of "I run the meeting and bring the calm." We captured her in motion, mid-laugh, grounded and strong.

  • The Visionary Speaker: With her pink mic in hand and a glint in her eye, Holly showed up as the engaging, confident communicator she is. Think TED Talk energy with a touch of joyful rebellion.

  • The Empowerment Coach: These images were all about connection. Holly in cozy textures, scribbling notes and brainstorming. The coach who makes you feel seen, not sold to.

  • Your Wise Fun Bestie: Here came the sparkle. Think fuzzy slippers, lipstick laughs, and laptop hustle. This was the side of Holly that says, "You can be brilliant and wear a tiara."

  • The Celebratory Woman: We ended with confetti, champagne, and the kind of confidence that only comes from doing work that aligns deeply with who you are.

Every outfit, setting, and expression was designed to reflect not just what Holly does, but who she is. These images will now live across her website, social platforms, digital products, and speaking materials. They build consistency and trust while still feeling human and approachable.

Hair and makeup ahead of time by Valerie Hammer Makeup Artistry brought the confidence and allowed her true beauty to take center stage.

Strategic and Soulful

This shoot was about more than pretty pictures. It was a brand alignment session. Holly's audience, ambitious women navigating growth, pivots, and reinvention, will see themselves in these images. Her clients want to follow a leader who is grounded in both intuition and strategy. These photos invite them in.

If you're a thought leader, coach, or creative entrepreneur looking to tell your brand story in a more authentic and cohesive way, reach out. Let's create a session that not only looks like you, but feels like you.

Quiet Confidence: Headshots for Federal Workers

Lately, I’ve had the pleasure of photographing an inspiring group of federal workers through a limited-time discount program I’m offering. Beth, Danielle, and Maggie walked in a little hesitant (because hey, we’re not all models), but left with a new sense of confidence in themselves. Here's a little peek behind the scenes.

This fall, I’ve been busy with a steady stream of headshot sessions for federal workers who have been furloughed, let go or somewhere in between. It's been part of a special discount program I created to support government employees in the DC-Maryland-Virginia area who are unexpectedly facing a career shift.

This week, I had the chance to work with Beth, Danielle, and Maggie. None of them came in feeling particularly ready for the camera. Each one was understandably hesitant at first. We’re not used to seeing ourselves in professional photos, and most of us don’t love being in front of the lens. But something shifted during each session.

Beth and Danielle (2 and 3 below) had their makeup professionally done beforehand by Valerie Hammer Makeup Artistry, which gave them an extra boost of confidence. A little pampering goes a long way in helping you feel pulled together and camera-ready.

By the end, they weren’t just more relaxed…they stood a little taller, smiled with ease, and walked away with more confidence than they walked in with. That’s what I love about this work.

A good headshot isn’t about perfect lighting or poses. It’s about capturing who you are in the moment. And for these three, that meant a quiet confidence that grew stronger as the session went on.

If you’re a federal worker and you’ve been thinking about updating your headshots, now's a great time. The discount program is still available, and I’d love to help you create photos that reflect the next chapter of your career.

The Subtle Psychology of Posing for Brand Photos | Ginny Filer Photography

Posing in branding photography is more than looking good on camera — it’s a powerful tool for shaping how people perceive you and your business. Learn how small tweaks in posture, expression, and movement can send the right message before you say a single word.

Posing isn’t just about looking good. It’s about what it conveys in your image. The way you stand, where you look, and even the tilt of your chin can send a message about who you are and how people feel about you.

That’s the beauty (and the sneaky power) of posing in branding photography. We’re not just aiming for looking good (although we all want to feel confident and feel good about the way we look - no shame!) but we’re also shaping the perception your audience has before they ever read about you.

Why Posing Matters More Than You Think

In branding photography, your images work hard for you. They’re introducing you to new clients, showing you as an expert in your field, and helping people decide if you’re the kind of person they want to work with.

The right pose can say:

  • Confident and in control (without crossing into “intimidating”)

  • Approachable and friendly (while still professional)

  • Creative and dynamic (hello, energy and movement)

The wrong pose? It can unintentionally make you seem closed-off, hesitant, or not engaged — and no one wants that representing their business.

The Psychology Behind It

Here’s where it gets fun. Posing taps into body language. These are the kind of cues our brains have been trained to read.

A few key ones:

  • Open body language builds trust
Turning your shoulders toward the camera and keeping your arms relaxed signals that you’re approachable. Crossing arms can work, but it should feel confident, not defensive.

  • Eye contact = connection
Looking directly into the lens builds intimacy and trust, while looking away can create a sense of aspiration or “dreaming big.” We often mix both in a session to tell your full story.

  • Leaning forward feels engaged
A subtle forward lean can make you look more interested and invested in the conversation you’re having with your viewer.

  • Movement adds energy
Walking, adjusting your sleeve, or flipping through your notebook creates a candid, dynamic vibe that feels less staged.

My Approach During Your Session

I’ll never just plop you in front of the camera and say “smile.” Instead, I guide you into poses that make sense for your personality and your brand’s message.

If your brand is bold and high-energy, we’ll do poses that have movement and angles. If your brand is calm and trustworthy, we’ll focus on softer postures and open gestures. The key is making you feel comfortable enough to forget you’re being posed — that’s when the natural, authentic expressions show up.

A Quick At-Home Experiment

Try this in the mirror (or with your phone camera):

  1. Stand with your arms crossed tightly and look slightly down.

  2. Now, uncross your arms, roll your shoulders back, and give the tiniest smile.

See the difference? That’s exactly what we’re aiming for in your brand photos - the subtle tweaks that shift the whole vibe.

The Bottom Line

Branding photography isn’t about stiff, “yearbook-style” poses. It’s about crafting images that feel like you, while quietly sending the right message to your audience. The right pose helps you radiate confidence, build trust, and connect — all without saying a single word.
