MARYLAND PHOTOGRAPHER
Hi, I’m Ginny
I photograph families, babies, and small business owners in Maryland and throughout DC and Northern Virginia.
Some people come to me because they want to remember this season with their kids before it changes again.
Others come because they need photos that actually feel like them. Not stiff. Not overdone. Just real, polished, and aligned with where they are right now.
Either way, you don’t need to have it all figured out. I’ll guide you through it.
I love working on location or in my studio. I’m up for what’s best for your family, your business and you.
Two Ways to Work Together
I’m a Maryland photographer based in Silver Spring, working with families, professionals, and small business owners across Washington DC, Bethesda, Rockville, and Northern Virginia.
I offer two distinct ways to work together: heartfelt family photography that captures real connection, and strategic portrait photography for professionals who need imagery that works hard for them.
Whether you’re updating family photos, planning a newborn session, refreshing your LinkedIn presence, or building a stronger visual brand for your business, the experience is designed to feel thoughtful, low-stress, and genuinely enjoyable.
Sessions are available in my Silver Spring studio or on location throughout the DMV, with clear guidance every step of the way so you never have to wonder what to do next.
This is for anyone who have outgrown their old headshot. (or really, just cringes at their current one.)
It may technically work… but doesn’t really feel like you.
Maybe you’ve stepped into something bigger.
Maybe your business has evolved.
Maybe you’re showing up more and realizing your photos aren’t keeping up.
Maybe it’s a full brand overhaul to fix that. Or maybe it’s a headshot. Or something in-between.
But you do need images that feel aligned.
My approach is simple. We create photos that feel like you, just a little more pulled together, more intentional, more in line with where you’re going.
Not stiff. Not overly styled. Not trying too hard.
Just confident, natural, and current.
And you won’t have to guess what to do at any point. I’ll guide you through the entire process so you don’t feel awkward standing in front of the camera.

It’s Not Just About the Photos
There are a lot of photographers in Maryland.
What tends to bring people here is how the experience feels.
Everything is thoughtfully planned, but not rigid.
You are guided, but not overly posed.
Organized, but relaxed
(and dare I say….fun!)
I’m paying attention to the small things the whole time.
The way your kid leans into you.
The way you hold yourself when you’re a little unsure.
The moments in between what you think I’m photographing.
And whether it’s your family session or a headshot you’ve been putting off for years, you’ll walk away feeling like it was easier than you expected.
I’ve been doing this for over a decade,
and the biggest thing I’ve learned
is that people need someone who can lead,
keep things moving,
and make it feel manageable.
She made what can be an awkward experience very comfortable and relaxed, and the photos came out beautifully. The quality is amazing, plus my husband and I had fun throughout this whole experience. Whether it be responding to all our questions and emails immediately, working out the details of the shoot and contract, being relaxed and easy to talk to during our session, plus fast turn around and good quality rates, we were so impressed with her and will refer her to our friends.

We’ll choose what works best for your session, your schedule,
& the kind of photos you want.
I photograph newborns and families to headshots, modern portraits, & full branding shoots.
So whether you’re documenting your family or updating how you show up professionally, you don’t have to start over with someone new.
If we’ve worked together before, you already know how I work, and I already know how to help you feel comfortable in front of the camera.
And if you’re new here, know that the goal is the same no matter the type of session: making the process feel approachable, straightforward, and far less awkward than you might expect.
Ginny came by to take pictures of me and my daughter. I was a little nervous because my little one tends to tense up for the camera. Ginny was great, and my daughter took right to her, and was smiling and super happy. We had some great series.
When I got the pictures back, they were simply amazing, beautiful. I have so many great pictures of us smiling and laughing together. I would recommend Ginny 1000 times over!
She was the best!

This should feel easier than you think
Most of the people I work with are juggling a lot - busy schedules. Kids. Careers. A million tabs open in their brain at all times.
So whether we’re planning a family session or updating your headshots, I get it.
I take the pressure off.
You don’t need to know how to pose.
You don’t need to have perfect outfits.
You don’t need perfectly behaved kids.
You just need to show up.
I’ll guide the rest in a way that feels natural, calm, and actually kind of fun. (yes, this is possible!)
That’s the throughline in everything I do. And it’s why so many people come back year after year.
My sessions are guided, but relaxed.
I’ll absolutely tell you what to do so you’re never standing there wondering what to do with your hands or whether you’re doing this “right,” but nothing is stiff, overly posed, or forced. The goal is not perfection. It’s creating images that feel natural, confident, and genuinely like you.
With families…
that usually means giving kids room to move, explore, play, and be themselves while I gently guide things in the background. I’m not expecting perfect behavior or constant smiling at the camera. Some of the best moments happen in the in-between, when everyone relaxes a little and just interacts naturally.
With headshots and branding…
the approach shifts a bit, but the goal stays the same. Most people do not walk in feeling instantly comfortable in front of a camera, and that’s completely normal. I’ll help with expression, posture, movement, and all the little adjustments that make a big difference so you look polished, approachable, and like yourself, not like you’re pretending to be someone else.

That Doesn’t Feel Like a Whole Thing
I photograph both in my Silver Spring studio and on location throughout the DMV.
Some people want the simplicity of showing up to a beautiful studio where everything is ready to go. Others want images that feel a little more personal, lived-in, or connected to a place that matters to them. Maybe that’s your home, your office, or an outdoor spot where your kids can run wild for a bit. There’s no right answer here. The best location is the one that supports the kind of images you want without creating unnecessary stress, and I’m always happy to help you figure that out.
If you’re a mom trying to coordinate schedules, outfits, and kids who may or may not cooperate… I get it. (as a mom of 2, I’m with you)
This is usually the part that stops people.
But - it’s doesn’t have to be stressful.
My sessions are relaxed and kid-friendly, with just enough direction to keep things moving without forcing anything. We let your kids be themselves. We keep things light. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, we get the photos you actually want.
The ones where everyone feels like themselves.
The ones where you’re in them too.
Because that part matters.
Most sessions take place outdoors around Montgomery County, Washington DC, or Northern Virginia, or in my Silver Spring studio depending on what fits your family best.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
After years of tracking the weather for sessions, it's never truly accurate until a few hours before. If rain is in the forecast, I ask what is the latest possible time we can make the call for a Plan B.
If at the agreed-upon time it still looks like rain, we can either move the session indoors to your home, or find a time to reschedule based on mutual availability.
-
The busiest seasons are spring and fall.
I recommend reaching out in Feb/March for spring sessions and July/August for fall sessions.
During the rest of the year 1-2 months in advance is recommended!
-
Try to avoid anything too "matchy-matchy". Think about complementary colors as opposed to matching colors. Alternate solids and prints.
Photos generally look the best when there is a nice blend of 2 or 3 colors among everyone. Layers, textures, and accessories all play well on camera. Neutral colors provide a timeless look. Wear something YOU are comfortable in- if you're not, it will come across.

Kids are going to be...kids!! I want to embrace their uniqueness and allow that to shine through the photos. There will probably be moments of giggles, some meltdowns, and flat-out frustration. And that is okay!
The key is to let go of control and embrace the moment. I try to keep the session moving by playing games and taking breaks as necessary. And you never know, those wild personalities photos maybe some of your favorites!

Yes! Your furry friends are welcome to join for outdoor or home locations! If we are not at your home, we need to make sure the location is dog friendly! It's helpful to bring treats as motivation to keep attention towards the camera!
If your dog is super energetic, we'll need a way to keep the dog occupied if you want some photos without them. Sometimes bringing a friend to watch the dog while you're taking photos can be helpful!
Due to allergies and equipment, I cannot have dogs in the studio. -
You will receive a link via email to an online gallery where you can view and download your photos. You can share this link with friends and family. You can also order prints and cards directly from the gallery!
My turnaround time is 1-2 weeks.

Have you ever looked through your childhood photos and thought, “Ugh, I wish my mom had lost a few pounds before getting in the picture,” or, “Why are there so many pictures of me with my parents?” Of course not. You’re just happy those photos exist, right?
We’re all our own worst critics, but your kids don’t care about any of that. What they will care about is having real photos of themselves with you. Time is flying, and this chapter of your family’s story will be over before you know it.Item description

Tips & Advice
Here’s what I’ve learned after doing this for years: the “prettiest” location doesn’t always give you the best photos. The right location is less about chasing the most gorgeous backdrop and more about choosing a place that makes sense for your family. Kids who feel comfortable tend to have more fun. Parents who aren’t stressed show up differently too. And that always translates better in photos than forcing a location that looks great on paper but feels like a logistical headache.
How to Choose the Right Location for Your Family
What to Wear for a Spring Photo Session
If you’re planning spring family photos in the DMV, here are a few simple guidelines to help the entire experience come together with less stress and better results. A successful session is not about getting every detail perfect. It’s about making intentional choices that help your family feel comfortable, connected, and ready to enjoy the moment.
If you’re not fully clear on how you want to show up, what your brand actually feels like, or what you want people to take away when they land on your site, the “let’s just get some photos” approach usually creates more confusion, not less. Suddenly you have a gallery full of images, but no real framework for how to use them. More options can feel productive, but without strategy, they often just make decision-making harder.
Why “Just Get Some Photos” Rarely Works
Ginny Filer is a Maryland photographer based in Silver Spring, offering family, newborn, maternity, headshot, and branding photography throughout
Washington DC, Montgomery County, and Northern Virginia.
Her work blends a relaxed, natural approach with thoughtful direction, creating images that feel genuine, elevated, and aligned with each stage of life or business. She’s known for making the process feel far less intimidating than people expect, whether she’s working with energetic kids, camera-shy adults, or business owners who have no idea where to start. The goal is never stiff, overly polished perfection. It’s creating imagery that feels connected, confident, and unmistakably you.
