Sometimes branding photos are about updating your website. Sometimes they’re about finally stepping into the business you’ve already built.
One of my recent branding clients, a Maryland therapist, put words to something I hear all the time but rarely so beautifully: the hesitation to be seen, even when you’ve spent years building something incredible.
If You’ve Been Putting Off Branding Photos, You’re Not Alone
As a Maryland branding photographer, I work with a lot of women who are wildly accomplished.
Therapists. Consultants. Entrepreneurs. Creatives. Business owners.
And despite all that experience, confidence, and expertise?
So many still hesitate when it comes to professional photos. Not because they don’t understand the value or because they can’t make the investment.
But because being visible feels vulnerable.
Updating your website, showing your face online, or stepping into a more polished version of your business can stir up all kinds of thoughts:
Am I really established enough for this?
Do I actually need this?
What if I feel awkward?
What if I hate every photo?
That hesitation is incredibly normal.
One of my recent clients, therapist Jen Udler of Positive Strides Therapy, described that feeling in a way I could never say better myself.
A Therapist’s Perspective on Visibility, Confidence, and the Inner Critic
Jen shared this after our branding session together:
There’s something inside each of us that can hold us back. Clinicians often refer to that negative internal voice as the ‘inner critic’: the stream of self-defeating thoughts that says, ‘You’re not good enough,’ or ‘You’re not capable.’
In psychoanalytic theory, Sigmund Freud described a related concept called the superego, the part of the psyche associated with internalized rules, self-judgment, and inhibition.
After 13 years of owning my own business as a psychotherapist, I finally worked up the courage to hire a photographer for professional headshots.
This was not difficult because of budget, timing, or logistics. It was difficult because, for many years, a part of me still felt like I was ‘playing’ business.
I mean. Whew.
Because if you’re a business owner reading this and quietly thinking well that hit a little too close to home… same.
Branding Photography Is About More Than Looking Professional
Yes, your branding photos should absolutely help your website look polished.
Yes, they should help you show up consistently on social media, in email marketing, LinkedIn, speaking engagements, and anywhere else your business lives.
But the best branding sessions do something bigger.
They help you close the gap between how capable you already are and how confidently you’re showing up.
Jen continued:
When I arrived for my outdoor portrait session with Ginny, I was not nervous. I felt confident, ready, and excited.
I felt like I had finally arrived at a moment I truly deserved.
Over the past 13 years, I have built a business I am deeply proud of, become a leader in my field, and supported countless clients through their mental health journeys.
That’s what branding photography should feel like; Not performative or stiff or pretending to be someone you’re not. Just a clearer reflection of who you already are.
What Makes a Branding Session Different?
As a Maryland branding photographer, I’m not just showing up with a camera and hoping for the best.
Branding sessions are strategic.
We talk through:
your business goals
where the images will actually be used
your audience
the tone and personality of your brand
locations that make sense for your business
wardrobe
props that feel natural and relevant
For Jen, that meant creating images that felt warm, approachable, grounded, and professional, which is exactly how she shows up as a therapist.
And maybe my favorite part of what she wrote:
Ginny’s sense of ease, humor, and authenticity allowed me, and my team, to simply be ourselves.
What I expected to feel like a professional photo shoot ended up feeling more like a celebration.
THAT is the goal.
Maryland Branding Photography for Women Ready to Be Seen
If your website still has outdated headshots or you’re relying on stock images, or your visuals don’t reflect the level of business you’ve already built…
This might be your sign.
You do not need to have every detail figured out first and you do not need to be “more ready.” You probably just need someone to guide the process and make it feel doable.
Because branding photography is not about becoming someone different.
It’s about showing up as the version of yourself that already exists.
Jen, thank you for putting this experience into words so thoughtfully.
And if you’re looking for a Maryland branding photographer who will help you feel comfortable, prepared, and genuinely like yourself in front of the camera, I’d love to chat.
