I pay attention to the smaller details that are difficult to manage when you are the person in front of the camera: posture, hands, clothing, hair, expression, and the angle of your face. If something needs adjusting, I will tell you. You will not be left standing in front of the camera wondering what to do next.
The goal is not to create a stiff corporate photograph or an overly casual image that does not fit your experience. We are looking for the point where professional and approachable meet.
What to Wear for Professional Headshots
Choose clothing that feels appropriate for the roles you are pursuing while still feeling like something you would wear.
Good options include:

Business-casual separates
Simple jewelry that does not distract from your face
Solid colors usually photograph well, particularly medium or deeper tones such as blue, green, burgundy, plum, or warm neutrals. Very small patterns can create visual distractions, while large logos or highly reflective fabrics can pull attention away from your expression.
If you are moving from government work into consulting, speaking, nonprofit leadership, or the private sector, consider bringing two options. One can feel more traditional and polished, while the other can be slightly more relaxed.

Professional hair and makeup are not required, but they can help you feel pulled together and ready for the camera, particularly if doing your own makeup adds stress to the day. Valerie understands how makeup needs to translate on camera while still looking natural in person.
When schedules allow, we can coordinate the appointments so you can go directly from Valerie’s studio to mine.
