Branding Session with Kim at Hear Me Roar Studio
Hear Me Roar Studio in Silver Spring, MD, is more than just a recording space; it's a sanctuary where musicians find common ground and a profound love for the spiritual connection that music provides. Kim's mission revolves around creating a welcoming space where artists can freely express what music means to them without the burden of insecurity, particularly among women stepping into the studio.
I had the pleasure of working with Kim at Hear Me Roar Studio to capture her unique brand and personality behind her music production company.
Hear Me Roar Studio is more than just a recording space; it's a sanctuary where musicians find common ground and a profound love for the spiritual connection that music provides. Kim's mission revolves around creating a welcoming space where artists can freely express what music means to them without the burden of insecurity, particularly among women stepping into the studio. Everything exudes warmth, laughter and an environment where you can be free to explore and be YOU.
We started with hair and makeup with Valerie Hammer Makeup Artistry- our go-to girl for looking and feeling like “you”. Val gets how to use makeup to enhance and bring out the best version of yourself so you are camera ready!
Next was Kim’s studio. Where all the magic happens! I didn’t know this, but Kim let me know that women actually hear music differently then men! Not better, just different. Her studio is a welcoming place where artists can come to collaborate, work out their pieces and talk through their music. It’s part music writing, part therapy sometimes! And Kim’s warmth and energy are exactly what you need as a partner to bring forth your music! One of her friends actually wrote a song while we were shooting - it was so cool watch it come together before my eyes!
Kim is an amazing artist herself, so getting the chance to listen to her riff and play and sing….so fun! Music clearly runs through her at all times and is just who she is. She loves to laugh and not take herself too seriously!
Our last set of photos was in my studio, where we could have fun playing around with outfits and poses and all the ways that these photos could be used throughout her social channels and website. Her personality simply shines through!
We also created some GIFs and flatlays that will have lots of use on social channels and a fun way to make announcements or share info that feels personalized and on brand.
If you or anyone you know are interested in getting their music produced, Kim is your woman to guide you every step of the way. And may just be your best friend after! :)
5 Smart Tips for Choosing Your Wardrobe for a Brand Session
Wondering what to wear to make your brand shine? Here are 5 smart tips to help you select the perfect wardrobe for your upcoming brand session.
Wondering what to wear to make your brand shine? Here are 5 smart tips to help you select the perfect wardrobe for your upcoming brand session.
1. Reflect Your Brand Vibe
Your wardrobe is more than just clothes; it's an extension of your brand persona. When selecting outfits, think about the vibe you want to convey. Are you aiming for a casual, approachable look, or is your brand all about polished professionalism? Whatever your style, make sure it aligns seamlessly with your brand's personality, creating a cohesive visual story.
2. Embrace Color Psychology
Colors speak volumes, and they play a crucial role in shaping perceptions. Consider the colors associated with your brand or the emotions you want to evoke. Bold, vibrant colors can exude energy and confidence, while softer tones convey a more relaxed and approachable feel. Mix and match colors strategically to create a visually appealing and harmonious ensemble.
3. Add a Splash of Pattern or Texture
While solid colors are timeless, don't shy away from incorporating patterns or textures into your wardrobe. They add visual interest and depth to your photos, creating a dynamic look. Stripes, florals, or subtle textures can elevate your outfit without distracting from your brand's essence. Just remember to keep it balanced – you want your clothes to enhance, not overpower.
4. Consider Your Brand's Story and Setting
Think about the narrative you want your brand photos to tell and where they'll be set. If your brand is all about outdoor adventures, flowy dresses or relaxed casual wear might be the perfect fit. For a more corporate setting, opt for polished and professional attire. Your outfit should complement both your brand's story and the chosen backdrop, ensuring a seamless blend between you and your surroundings.
5. Prioritize Comfort and Confidence
Last but certainly not least, prioritize comfort and confidence. Choose outfits that make you feel amazing and align with your personal style. If you're constantly adjusting or feeling self-conscious about your clothing, it will reflect in your photos. Confidence is the ultimate accessory, so pick pieces that empower you, allowing you to shine authentically in front of the camera.
Bonus Tip: Don't forget about accessories! A well-chosen accessory can elevate your look and add a touch of personality. Whether it's a statement necklace, a stylish watch, or a pop of color in your shoes, accessories can be the perfect finishing touch to complete your brand ensemble.
And as always, I’m here to help! If you have questions or want to float some ideas past someone, don’t hesitate to send a pic or reach out!

Why a Creative Brief Is the Most Important Part of Branding Photography in the DMV
Most entrepreneurs think they need better photos. What they actually need is clarity. Here’s why the creative brief is the foundation of powerful branding photography across the DMV.
Whether you’re building a personal brand in Washington DC, refining your authority in Maryland, or scaling your business across Northern Virginia, clarity always comes before great photos.
Ever wondered how brand photography comes to life? The secret lies in the magic wand called the "Creative Guide (or Brief)." Read on to find out what it is, why we use it, and how I craft it to ensure that every photoshoot is a masterpiece.
What is a Creative Guide or BRIEF?
In branding photography, a creative guide is not just a checklist. It’s the strategic foundation of your entire visual identity. A Creative Guide is the compass that guides the ship of visual storytelling. It's a comprehensive document that serves as the backbone of any creative project, outlining the vision, goals, and details that shape the final outcome. In the world of branding photography, a Creative Brief is the sacred text that ensures we capture the spirit of a brand authentically.
Branding Photography in the DMV Requires Strategy, Not Just Aesthetic
The Biggest Misconception About Branding Photos
Many established entrepreneurs think they just need updated photos for their website or LinkedIn.
What they actually need is alignment.
Alignment between their expertise and their visual presence.
Alignment between their authority and their online identity.
Why is it Used?
Think of a Creative Guide as the architect's blueprint for a skyscraper. It's used for several crucial reasons:
Alignment of Vision: A Creative Guide brings all collaborators onto the same page, aligning everyone involved – from the photographer to the client – on the visual direction and goals of the project.
Clarity in Execution: It provides a clear roadmap for decision-making, guiding choices regarding everything from location and lighting to wardrobe and props. This clarity streamlines the entire creative process.
Efficiency: With a well-defined guide, time and resources are used judiciously, avoiding wastage and ensuring that every element contributes to the overarching narrative.
Brand Essence: The Creative Guide distills the very essence of a brand – its personality, values, and unique selling points – ensuring that every photograph tells a story that resonates with the brand identity.
How I Put Together a Creative GUIDE
Client Consultation: It all begins with completing an extensive questionnaire so I can really learn everything I can about you and your brand. From there we have a conversation to ask questions, get more clarity and make sure I’m on the right track. I dive deep into understanding your brand, your goals, and the story you want to tell through visuals.
Visual Inspiration: Much like a mood board, I gather visual inspiration – images, colors, and styles that align with your brand's personality. This helps set the tone for the upcoming photoshoot.
Define Objectives: What do you want to achieve with this photoshoot? Whether it's highlighting a product, capturing a team's camaraderie, or showcasing a brand's ethos, clearly defined objectives are crucial.
Logistics and Details: The devil is in the details! I outline logistical aspects such as location, date, and time, ensuring that the practical elements seamlessly support the creative vision.
Collaborative Input: The Creative Guide is a collaborative effort. I welcome input from you, encouraging everyone to share their ideas, preferences, and any specific elements you envision.
In conclusion, the Creative Guide is our guide, ensuring every photo resonates with the soul of a brand. Ready to embark on a visual storytelling adventure? Let's craft your brand's visual narrative together!
