One of my favorite parts of every family session is making sure Mom and Dad get a few photographs together. And the comment is always “oh, we never get to do this!”
It makes sense when you think about it. By the time couples have been together for ten, fifteen, or twenty years, they've accumulated thousands of photos on their phones. Most of them are of their children, vacations, birthdays, school events, and everyday life. They're documenting their family's story, which is exactly as it should be.

Mike and Ashley Were the Perfect Couple to Help Me Bring This Idea to Life
When I first met Mike and Ashley, owners of Paper Heart Bookstore in Kentlands, I knew they would be the perfect couple for this session.
On the surface, they're booksellers. But if you've ever spent time talking with them or visited one of their events, you quickly realize that books are only part of what they do.
What they're really passionate about is creating connection.
They've built a space where people gather, have conversations, discover new ideas, and become part of a community. As someone whose work has always been centered around relationships and genuine connection, that resonated with me immediately.
Their session wasn't about recreating their wedding portraits or pretending they were engaged again. It was about documenting who they are today.
Ashley started with hair and makeup with Val. It set the tone for the entire experience. Instead of feeling rushed, the day felt intentional from the very beginning.
By the time we started photographing, they had already slowed down enough to simply enjoy being together. We all were able to get to know each other; talk, laugh, share restaurant and travel recommendations and commiserate on parenting whoas.
That’s almost as much fun as the photos themselves!
And the photos were fun too. Because they were also business owners, we incorporated the books to show they share their lives together but also their business and connection with books. We danced, laughed, experimented with different setups, and created space for genuine moments to unfold naturally.
Of course, we made beautiful portraits, but what I loved even more was watching them enjoy the process.
The Experience Is Just as Important as the Photographs
After the session, Mike mentioned something that has stayed with me.
He talked about how much he enjoyed the experience itself.
That might sound obvious, but I don't think we make enough room for experiences like this as adults.
Life moves quickly. Between work, family responsibilities, and everything else competing for our attention, it's surprisingly difficult to carve out uninterrupted time together. Even date nights often become conversations about schedules, errands, or what needs to happen next week.
For this moment in time, there wasn't anywhere else to be and no one needed anything from them.
They simply had the chance to laugh together, be present with one another, and enjoy doing something a little outside of their normal routine.
The photographs became a lasting reminder of that afternoon, but they weren't the only thing they walked away with.
I think that's what makes these sessions special.
