What to Wear for Headshots | Styling Guide

Headshots are an important way to introduce yourself to the world. They are the first impression you make on your audience and can influence their perception of you. So the big question is, what to wear?

Choose clothes that fit well

First of all, it's important to choose clothes that fit well and that YOU fill good in. You don't want anything too tight or too loose, as it can make you look unprofessional. Instead, opt for clothes that fit you perfectly and accentuate your best features. If there’s a part of you that you are self-conscious of, choose an outfit that flatters that feature. You want to feel confident and comfortable in whatever you are wearing and not constantly adjusting anything. (for example, if you are self-conscious about your arms, don’t wear sleeveless or super short sleeves- long sleep or 3/4 length is a better option!)

Stick to neutral colors

Neutral colors such as black, white, grey, and navy blue are perfect for headshots. They are classic and timeless, and they complement any skin tone. Avoid wearing bright, bold colors, as they can be distracting and take the focus away from your face. If you're unsure about which color to wear, choose something in a neutral shade that you feel comfortable in. Also think about where you are mainly planning on using these photos. If your website has a color palette, try to match the same palette.

Avoid busy patterns

Busy patterns such as stripes, checks, and polka dots can be distracting in headshots. They can also clash with the background and make the photo look cluttered. Instead, choose solid colors or subtle patterns such as small dots or a fine weave. These patterns will add some interest to your outfit without overpowering your face.

Accessorize

Accessories can add some personality to your headshot. Statement jewelry, scarves, hats, etc all play well on camera. Just be careful it doesn’t overwhelm your outfit. Feel free to bring options to swap in and out!

Look your best!

Your headshot should be a reflection of your best self, so do the things that make you feel confident! Get a haircut, shave or trim your beard, and make sure your nails are clean and trimmed. Consider getting professional make-up done to bring out all your features! (I can recommend a great resource near my studio!)
