What People Are Often Surprised By After Working With Me

After years of photographing families, newborns, and professionals in Silver Spring and the DC area, certain themes come up again and again in client reviews. This post shares what people most often say after their session; from feeling comfortable in front of the camera to walking away with photos that truly feel like them.

What I Hear Most Often From Clients After Their Photo Session

When someone reaches out for photos, they usually come in with at least a little hesitation.

Sometimes it’s, “I hate having my picture taken.”
Sometimes it’s, “My kids will never make it through this.”
Sometimes it’s, “I need these for my business, but I’m not totally sure what I want yet.”

After years of photographing families, newborns, and professionals around Silver Spring and the DC area, I’ve started to notice patterns in what people say once they’ve seen their photos and reflected on the experience.

Not about the images themselves, but about how the process felt.

Here are the things I hear most often.

“I was nervous, but I felt comfortable really quickly.”

This is probably the most common thing clients tell me.

Many people walk into a session convinced they’re awkward in photos or worried they won’t know what to do. My job isn’t just to take pictures. It’s to create an environment where you can relax enough to forget about the camera.

That might look like:

  • Clear, gentle direction instead of stiff posing

  • A calm pace, especially for families with kids or newborns

  • Reassurance that there’s no pressure to perform

When people feel at ease, the photos naturally follow.

“I didn’t know exactly what I wanted, but you helped me figure it out.”

This comes up a lot with branding and headshot sessions.

Not everyone shows up with a fully formed vision. That’s okay. I expect that.

Through preparation, conversation, and guidance during the session, we shape the images together. Whether that’s refining a brand message, choosing the right vibe for a headshot, or adjusting on the fly, clients often tell me they felt supported instead of rushed or unsure.

You don’t need to have it all figured out before you arrive.

“Everything felt easy and well organized.”

Photography can feel overwhelming if the logistics aren’t clear.

Clients frequently mention how helpful it is to know what to expect before the session even starts. From booking and communication to prep guides and session flow, I try to remove as much friction as possible so you can focus on showing up.

When the process feels seamless, it frees up energy for what actually matters.

“I was shocked by how fast I got my photos.”

Fast turnaround is something people consistently comment on.

I know how eager clients are to see their images, whether they need them for a website, LinkedIn, or simply because they’re excited. I prioritize delivering galleries quickly without sacrificing quality, so you’re not left waiting and wondering.

“The photos actually look like me.”

This might be the best compliment of all.

Over and over, clients say their photos feel natural, polished, and true to who they are. Not overly posed. Not forced. Just real.

That’s intentional.

Whether it’s a professional headshot, a branding session, or a family shoot, my goal is always the same: images that feel like you on a good day, not someone you don’t recognize.

“You were so patient and kind.”

This shows up especially in sessions involving kids, babies, and high-stress moments.

Things don’t always go perfectly. Toddlers melt down. Babies need breaks. People arrive flustered or late. Life happens.

Clients often tell me how much they appreciated the calm, flexible approach. Being photographed is personal, and kindness goes a long way in creating an experience people remember positively.

Why this matters to me

I don’t take it lightly that people trust me with moments that matter, whether that’s documenting a growing family or helping someone show up confidently for their business.

These reviews aren’t about perfection. They’re about feeling seen, supported, and taken care of.

And that’s always the goal.

If you’re curious about what a session could look like for you, I’m always happy to talk through ideas and answer questions before you book.

Why Women Deserve Beautiful Photos of Themselves

So many women put themselves last when it comes to updated photos. Whether it’s for LinkedIn, a professional milestone, or simply to celebrate yourself, portraits are more than pictures—they’re self-care. Julie and Rachel’s sessions show just how powerful a refreshed headshot can be.

Why Women Deserve Beautiful Photos of Themselves

When was the last time you had a professional headshot taken just for you? Not a blurry iPhone snap at a family gathering, not a cropped picture from a wedding five years ago… but a photo where you felt confident, cared for, and truly seen?

So often, I hear women say things like:

  • “I don’t need new portraits, I’m not that important.”

  • “I’ll do photos when I lose the weight.”

  • “I’ll just use this old one for now.”

But here’s the truth: you deserve to have photos that reflect who you are right now. Whether it’s for your LinkedIn profile, your business, or simply to celebrate yourself, having updated headshots is more than a professional necessity—it’s an act of self-care.

Think about it…how many of us are still using an old photo where we’ve cropped out a friend or spouse? It’s time to stop hiding behind “good enough” and give yourself permission to show up as your current, beautiful self.

That’s exactly why I created the Signature Session, in collaboration with Valerie Hammer Makeup Artistry. Professional hair and makeup aren’t about looking like someone else. They’re about bringing out the confidence that’s already in you. Every woman deserves to experience what it feels like to step in front of the camera with that extra boost of self-assurance.

And let me tell you, the difference is stunning. I see women walk in a little nervous, unsure if they’ll like how they look. Then, once Val has worked her magic and we start shooting, something shifts. Shoulders relax, smiles come easier, and there’s this sparkle that wasn’t there before.

Here’s Julie and Rachel - Both came to me needing new professional headshots for LinkedIn, but what they walked away with was so much more—images that truly capture their personality, presence, and confidence.

You don’t need a milestone, a big business launch, or a perfect excuse to book a session. Sometimes, the reason is simply: because you’re worth it.

Neon Tomatoes | Portrait session with Diann Hammer | Silver Spring, MD

I recently had the joy of photographing Diann Hammer, a talented songwriter who creates children’s music through Neon Tomatoes. Diann's music is full of joy, wonder, and imagination—designed to inspire kids with positive messages about the world around them. We decided to take her portrait session outdoors to reflect the natural, lighthearted energy that shines through her work, and it couldn’t have been a better fit.

Despite a few nerves, Diann was a natural in front of the camera! She brought along her little Taylor guitar, which made the perfect prop to showcase her connection to music. We had so much fun during the session—lots of laughs, and everything just flowed effortlessly. Her laid-back spirit and love for nature really came through in the photos, making it such a joy to capture her personality.

Fun fact: Diann is actually the mother-in-law of my good friend, Valerie from Valerie Hammer Makeup Artistry, who did an amazing job with Diann’s makeup. It was so special to have these two creative forces come together for this session.

If you’re not familiar with Neon Tomatoes, Diann’s music is all about spreading positivity, creativity, and love to children through songs that celebrate life and the world around us. Her mission is to create fun, meaningful music that not only entertains but also teaches kids important lessons about kindness, curiosity, and caring for the earth. You can check out more of her work here!

This session was such a beautiful way to celebrate Diann’s passion for music and her connection to nature. I’m so grateful to have been a part of it!
