Nonja’s Headshot Glow-Up: A Fun & Fabulous Studio Session
A great headshot is more than just a nice photo—it’s about feeling confident, looking like you, and having a little fun in the process! Nonja’s recent session at my Silver Spring studio was exactly that, with gorgeous makeup by Valerie Hammer Makeup Artistry and plenty of good vibes.
Headshots can feel so….intimidating. BUT, they can be fun! It’s about getting relaxed and feeling confident at the same time.
Easy, right?
yeahhh….not at all!
That’s why it is SO important to do the things that will bring a sense of comfort and confidence. This is what brings out the natural you.
It starts with hair and makeup. Putting you in the hands of someone that KNOWS hair and makeup and how to tailor it for you makes all the difference. I partner with Valerie Hammer Makeup Artistry (our studios are 2 minutes apart!) and she doesn’t just know the right makeup, she knows the right makeup for you and for photos. (I know, who knew they were different things?)
When you look great, you feel confident!
The next piece is feeling relaxed in front of the camera. That’s my job. :). It’s just me and you and I help walk you through exactly what to do. We play fun music and we keep it light and not-so-serious. (because too much of life is already serious!) And that’s how we make the magic happen!
Thank you, Nonja, for trusting Val and I to make you confident and relaxed in front of the camera and get these great photos!
We went for a mix of polished but natural looks, perfect for LinkedIn, websites, and anywhere else she wants to show up looking confident and approachable. No stiff, awkward poses—just easy, effortless headshots that let her personality shine.
If you’ve been putting off getting a new headshot because it feels intimidating (or just ugh—another thing on the to-do list), I promise, it’s way more fun than you think. Let’s make it easy and you—reach out to book your session today!

The Power of Props in Branding Photography: Must-Have Items for Your Session
Want to make your brand photos stand out? Here are creative prop ideas that reflect your personality and elevate your brand visuals.
When it comes to branding photography, props aren’t just accessories; they’re storytelling tools that add depth, context, and personality to your images. The right props help define your brand’s visual identity, reinforcing your message in a way that words alone simply can’t.
If you’re planning a branding session, here are some must-have props that can help make your shoot feel uniquely you:
1. Work Tools: Show What You Do
What tools do you use every day in your business? Whether it’s a laptop, notebook, camera, tablet, paintbrush, or even your phone, including these in your session instantly helps define your industry and expertise. These props make your images feel authentic and relatable—giving your audience a sneak peek into how you work behind the scenes.
2. Products: Showcase Your Work in Action
If you offer physical products, this is your moment to show, not just tell. Including your actual products, packaging, or materials in your session helps bring your brand to life. For service-based businesses, think about including items that represent your process—whether it’s a design sketch, a planner, or even a finished portfolio of your work.
3. Personal Touches: Make It Feel Real
Branding photography isn’t just about your business—it’s about you! Adding a few personal items, like your favorite coffee mug, a plant from your desk, or a book that inspires you, can help tell a more well-rounded story. These details make your photos feel inviting and relatable, showing your audience the human behind the brand.
4. Branded Items: Subtle but Powerful
Your brand identity is more than just your logo, but incorporating it into your session in subtle ways can be incredibly impactful. Think about including custom stationery, business cards, packaging, stickers, or even branded apparel. These touches reinforce brand recognition without feeling overly promotional.
5. Textures and Backgrounds: Add Depth and Interest
Your props don’t have to be objects—sometimes, textures and backgrounds can completely transform an image. Think soft blankets, patterned fabrics, wood surfaces, or interesting backdrops that align with your brand’s aesthetic. These elements add warmth and personality, helping your images feel more intentional and polished.
For MyDanceDC
How to Choose the Right Props for Your Brand
Not all props will make sense for every brand. When selecting items for your session, ask yourself:
Does this prop align with my brand’s aesthetic and personality?
Does it help tell a story or give context to what I do?
Will it resonate with my audience and make my brand feel more relatable?
Branding photography is about creating a visual narrative that connects with your audience. By incorporating meaningful props, you’re not just filling the frame—you’re making a statement about who you are and what you stand for.
Ready to plan your branding session? Let’s bring your brand to life—one thoughtfully chosen prop at a time!
Sneak Peek of Kate Regnier Restorative Counseling | Branding Session
Branding photos aren’t just about looking professional—they tell your story, showcase your personality, and help potential clients connect with you. Yesterday, I had the best time photographing Kate, a virtual EMDR therapist who specializes in working with high-achieving women attorneys in the DMV. Her love for plants, warm energy, and even her sweet kitties made this session feel so personal and intentional. And the best part? She’s already using the images on her website!
I’m kind of obsessed with these sneak peeks from Kate’s branding session!
She absolutely crushed it, and we captured so many images that truly reflect her warmth, expertise, and the safe space she creates for her clients. Kate specializes in virtual EMDR therapy for high-achieving women attorneys in the DMV—helping them process trauma and cultivate growth in a supportive environment.
And speaking of growth, her love for plants is the perfect metaphor for what she offers her clients: a space to feel nurtured, supported, and empowered. (Her cats definitely add to the cozy vibes, too!)
What’s even more exciting? Kate has already started using her new branding photos on her website! This is exactly why professional brand photography matters—it helps create an instant connection and builds trust with potential clients.
If you’re a therapist, coach, or entrepreneur looking for branding images that feel authentic, approachable, and aligned with your mission, let’s chat! Your brand deserves photos that make an impact.

5 Signs You’re Ready for a Branding Session
Not sure if it’s time to invest in brand photos? Here are five signs that you’re ready to elevate your visual marketing.
In today’s fast-paced digital world, your brand’s visuals are your first impression—and they matter more than ever. Whether it’s your website, social media, or marketing materials, the images you use speak volumes about your brand, your values, and your professionalism. But if your brand photos no longer feel aligned with your business, it might be time for an update. Here are five key signs that it’s time to refresh your brand photography.
1. Your Photos Feel Outdated
Your business has evolved, but your photos haven’t. Sound familiar? If your branding, services, or offerings have changed but your visuals don’t reflect those updates, it’s time for a refresh.
Maybe you’ve rebranded, shifted your focus, or expanded your team. Or perhaps your existing photos simply feel a little stale and don’t fully capture the energy of your brand. Updating your brand photography ensures your visuals remain relevant, fresh, and aligned with where your business is today.
2. You Rely on Stock Images
Stock photos can be useful in a pinch, but they can’t fully capture the uniqueness of your brand. They often feel generic, impersonal, and can even be used by multiple businesses in your industry—making it hard for you to stand out.
Custom brand photos, on the other hand, create a stronger connection with your audience by showcasing the real people, products, and experiences behind your brand. They establish trust, make your brand feel more authentic, and allow your audience to see the face behind the business.
3. Your Website Feels Stale
If you’re launching a new website, product, or service, don’t underestimate the power of fresh, high-quality images to elevate your brand presence. Your website is often the first place potential clients visit, and compelling visuals can make or break that first impression.
A new brand photography session can provide custom, on-brand images that reflect your personality, highlight your expertise, and showcase your products or services in a way that feels polished, modern, and inviting.
4. You Want to Stand Out on Social Media
In a crowded digital space, consistent and recognizable visuals help set you apart. If you’re finding it hard to maintain a cohesive aesthetic on social media or feel like your content blends in rather than stands out, new brand photography can make all the difference.
Custom brand photos allow you to create a visually cohesive and professional online presence. Whether it’s headshots, behind-the-scenes images, or lifestyle branding shots, these images help reinforce your brand identity, making your business instantly recognizable.
5. You’re Expanding Your Business
As your business grows, so should your brand visuals. New services, products, or team members deserve updated imagery that reflects these exciting changes.
Maybe you’re launching a new course, adding a service, or expanding into a different market. New brand photos help tell that story in a way that aligns with your brand’s evolution and keeps your audience engaged.
Ready to Refresh Your Brand Photos?
If any of these signs sound familiar, it’s probably time to invest in a brand photography session. Elevate your online presence, build trust with your audience, and showcase the best version of your brand with fresh, professional images.
I’d love to help you bring your brand to life with custom photography that captures your authenticity, expertise, and personality. Let’s chat about creating visuals that reflect the business you’ve built and where it’s headed next!

A Day for Feds | Free headshots, makeup and more
I’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response to the free headshots I offered last week, and it got me thinking—how can we do more? So, on March 14th, we’re turning our scheduled Headshot Marathon into a free event for impacted federal employees. Alongside Valerie Hammer and Locally Crafted, we’re offering headshots, makeup touch-ups, career services, legal and real estate guidance, crafting, and a supportive community—because sometimes, we just need to know we’re not alone. No cost, no appointment—just a space to feel seen, supported, and encouraged. If you or someone you know has been affected, join us. Let’s lift each other up. 💙
I've been overwhelmed with the positive response from the free headshots I did last week, so Valerie Hammer and I have decided to pivot our March 14th headshot marathon to a free event for impacted federal employees. And Locally Crafted in Gaithersburg has generally donated their event space.
So many have reached out to ask how they can help—so we’re creating a Day for Feds to offer even more support beyond headshots.
On Friday, March 14th, we’re gathering at Locally Crafted Workshop from 10 AM - 2 PM to offer:
Free Headshots (@ginnyfiler)– because a strong, confident image matters.
Photo-Ready Makeup Touchups (@mizchynuhdoll)– to help you look and feel your best
Career Services & Guidance – resume help, job search support & more.
Real Estate Guidance – if job shifts have impacted your housing plans.
Legal Advice - there will be a few lawyers there willing to provide advice
Crafting & Community (@createatlocallycrafted)– because sometimes we just need to create & connect.
Free Hugs – because support is more than just resources.
No cost. No appointment. Just a space to feel seen, supported, and encouraged.
If you or someone you know has been impacted by the recent and pending federal layoffs, please stop by. Whether you need a fresh headshot, career advice, or just a space to breathe, we’re here for you.
And if you’d like to donate your time, expertise, or resources, we’d love to have you join in this effort to support our federal community. Let’s lift each other up.
The event is free, but if you think you’ll attend, please register so we can get an idea of how many people to expect. But don't let that stop you from just showing up. Makeup and photography sessions will be held on a walk-in basis.

Reduced Price Headshots for Federal Employees | Silver Spring, MD
I was honored to provide free headshots to federal employees recently impacted by job loss and uncertainty. While I can’t continue offering them at no cost, I still want to help. That’s why I’m offering discounted headshot sessions in my studio—$150 instead of the usual $375—over the next few months. If this could be helpful to you or someone you know, please reach out. I’m here to support however I can.
Supporting Federal Employees in Transition
I had the opportunity to offer free headshots to federal employees (or anyone effected by the new administration) who have recently been let go and are facing an uncertain future. It was a small way to help, and I was truly moved by how much this resonated and brought hope.
While I can’t continue offering free sessions indefinitely, I do want to make professional headshots as accessible as possible for those in need. For the next few months, I’ll be offering discounted studio headshots for federal employees at $150 (regularly $475)—a way to keep this going while covering my costs.
This is also extended to any Washington Post employee effected by the recent layoffs!
Hair and Makeup
If you are interested in a short 35 minute hair/makeup before your session, Valerie Hammer Makeup Artistry is offering an $85 discounted session. Her studio is 2 minutes away and we could coordinate a date where you go straight from her studio to mine.
If this could help you or someone you know, please reach out. And if you’re in a position to help others, whether through resources, connections, or just encouragement, let’s continue finding ways to lift each other up.
Here is a link to others also working to uplift our community during this time.
DIY vs. Professional Branding Photography: What’s Best for Your Business?
Wondering if you should DIY your brand photos or hire a pro? Let’s break down the pros and cons so you can make the best choice.
DIY Branding Photography
Taking your own brand photos might sound like a budget-friendly, creative solution, and for some, it can be. With smartphones boasting incredible cameras and affordable editing apps, DIY photography has never been more accessible. However, it comes with its own set of challenges.
Pros:
Cost-Effective: Ideal for new businesses or startups with tight budgets. You can invest in a decent camera or even use your smartphone to capture content.
Creative Control: You have full creative freedom—choose your angles, settings, props, and styling without outside input.
On-Demand Content: Need a quick update or social media post? DIY allows you to create content anytime without scheduling a photographer.
Cons:
Quality Limitations: Without professional equipment and expertise, your images might lack the polish that makes your brand stand out.
Time-Consuming: Photography, editing, and planning take significant time away from running your business.
Lack of Expertise: Posing, lighting, and composition are learned skills—and missteps can result in amateur-looking photos that hurt your brand image.
Pro Tips for DIY Success:
Invest in good lighting—natural light or a ring light can make a huge difference.
Use simple editing tools like Lightroom Mobile or Canva for clean, professional edits.
Stick to consistent backgrounds and color schemes to maintain brand cohesion.
Professional Branding Photography
Hiring a professional photographer takes your brand visuals to the next level. A seasoned photographer brings experience, equipment, and a strategic eye to ensure every photo aligns with your brand’s story.
Pros:
High-Quality Results: Professional-grade equipment and editing create crisp, clean, and polished images.
Strategic Visual Storytelling: Photographers help translate your brand message into impactful visuals that resonate with your audience.
Time-Saving: A professional takes care of the planning, shooting, and editing, freeing you to focus on your business.
Consistency: Your brand visuals will be cohesive across all platforms, enhancing brand recognition.
Cons:
Cost: Professional photography is an investment and may not be feasible for very small budgets.
Scheduling: Planning a session requires time and coordination—you can’t create content on a whim.
When to Hire a Pro:
You’re launching a new website, product, or service.
You need a cohesive library of images for marketing materials.
You want to establish credibility and authority in your industry.
Final Thought: If you need consistent, high-quality images that reflect your brand’s identity and elevate your business, professional branding photography is worth the investment. For quick updates or budget-friendly options, DIY can work—but it should complement, not replace, professionally captured visuals.

Why Custom Photography Beats Stock Images for Your Brand
Stock photos might be convenient, but they lack authenticity and personalization. Custom branding photography helps build trust, ensures brand consistency, and makes your business stand out in a crowded market. Learn why investing in professional branding photos is the smarter choice.
First Impressions Matter
Your brand’s visuals are often the first thing potential clients notice about you. Whether it’s your website, social media, or marketing materials, the images you use play a crucial role in shaping perceptions. While stock photos might seem like a convenient solution, they often fall short in delivering a personalized and impactful brand presence. Here’s why investing in custom branding photography is a smarter choice.
1. Authenticity Builds Trust
Stock photos are generic by nature. They’re designed to appeal to a broad audience, which means they lack the personal touch that makes your brand unique. Custom branding photos, on the other hand, showcase YOU—your personality, your work environment, your team, and your real clients. This authenticity fosters trust and helps potential customers connect with your brand on a deeper level.
2. Consistency in Brand Identity
Your brand has a specific color palette, tone, and personality. Stock photos often feel disjointed because they come from different sources with varying styles. Custom photography ensures a cohesive look across all your platforms, reinforcing your brand identity and making your business instantly recognizable.
3. Stand Out From the Competition
Chances are, your competitors are using stock photos too—sometimes even the exact same ones. A unique brand requires unique visuals. Custom branding photography guarantees that your images are one-of-a-kind, setting you apart in a crowded market and making your brand memorable.
4. More Engagement & Connection
People are naturally drawn to real, relatable content. When potential clients see real images of you and your team, they feel a connection that stock photos simply can’t create. This leads to higher engagement on social media, better conversion rates, and stronger customer relationships.
5. Tailored to Your Business Needs
Stock photos rarely align perfectly with your brand message. They might be close, but there’s always something “off.” Custom branding photography is tailored specifically to your needs, ensuring that every image aligns with your message, audience, and marketing goals.
6. Legal Peace of Mind
Using stock photos comes with licensing restrictions, and it’s easy to accidentally violate copyright terms. With custom branding photos, you own the images outright, giving you full control over how and where they’re used without any legal concerns.
7. Versatility & Longevity
A single branding session provides a library of high-quality images that can be used across multiple platforms—your website, social media, email campaigns, press features, and more. Unlike stock photos that might feel outdated or overused, custom branding photos remain relevant and adaptable to your evolving brand.
Invest in Your Brand’s Visual Story
Your brand deserves more than generic imagery. Custom branding photography isn’t just about looking professional—it’s about telling your unique story, building trust, and creating a lasting impression. Ready to elevate your brand with visuals that truly represent you? Let’s chat about how custom branding photography can take your business to the next level!

Before the session, take some time to reflect on your brand. What do you want your audience to feel when they see your photos? Are you aiming for professional and polished or fun and approachable? Knowing your brand's personality will help us create images that feel authentic and aligned with your goals.
2. Plan Your Outfits (and Keep Them True to You)
Outfits play a huge role in how your brand comes across. Choose clothes that make you feel confident and reflect your style. Think about color palettes that align with your branding and avoid loud patterns that might distract. Layering can add variety to your look without needing a full outfit change. And don’t forget accessories—they can add a personal touch!
3. Location, Location, Location
Your backdrop should complement your brand’s vibe. Do you want a bright, airy space? Something modern and minimal? Or maybe a cozy coffee shop or outdoor setting feels more like you. We’ll collaborate to find a spot that reflects your story and gives your images character.
4. Incorporate Props and Tools of Your Trade
Bring items that tell your story! Whether it’s your laptop, favorite notebook, products you sell, or tools of your craft, props make your photos feel personal and give your audience a glimpse into how you work.
5. Get Comfortable in Front of the Camera
Not everyone loves being in front of the camera (totally normal!). But here’s the thing—you don’t need to be a model to look amazing. We’ll keep things light and natural. I’ll guide you through poses and prompts to help you feel at ease so your true personality shines through.
6. Hair, Makeup, and Self-Care
A little extra self-care goes a long way! Consider getting your hair and makeup professionally done if it feels right for you. It doesn’t need to be over-the-top—just enough to help you feel polished and confident. And remember to hydrate, get a good night’s sleep, and maybe treat yourself to a little something special before the shoot.
7. Think About How You'll Use Your Photos
Where will these photos live? On your website, Instagram, LinkedIn, email newsletters? Knowing this ahead of time helps us capture a variety of images—some close-up, some wide—to give you plenty of content for different platforms.
8. Relax and Have Fun!
The best photos happen when you’re comfortable and having fun. This session is all about capturing you and your brand—so embrace it! Laugh, move, and let your personality shine. The more relaxed you are, the more authentic and engaging your photos will be.

Branding Photos: Why Every Entrepreneur Needs Them
Hey, entrepreneurs! Ready to build trust, connect with your audience, and stand out online? Discover why professional branding photos are a game-changer—and guess what? You can even write them off as a business expense!
Running a business is no small feat. You’re juggling a million things, and in the middle of it all, you need to make sure your brand is leaving a lasting impression. In a world where people scroll endlessly, your visuals need to stop them in their tracks. That’s where branding photos come in. They’re not just pretty pictures; they’re how you tell your story, build trust, and show the world what makes your business you.
1. Your Brand is So Much More Than a Logo
Sure, your logo and colors matter, but your brand is also you—your personality, your quirks, and the heart behind your business. Professional branding photos capture that real, authentic vibe that stock photos and quick selfies just can’t. They show your audience exactly who you are and what it’s like to work with you.
2. People Buy From People They Trust
Let’s face it, trust is everything. High-quality photos make you look polished and professional, but more importantly, they make you relatable. When people can see your face, your workspace, and your process, they feel like they know you—and that makes them more likely to work with you.
3. Stand Out in a Noisy Online World
The internet is LOUD. Social media feeds are packed with content, and it’s so easy to get lost in the shuffle. Custom, professional photos make you pop. Whether it’s on your website, Instagram, or LinkedIn, thoughtful, cohesive visuals help you grab attention and keep it.
4. No More Scrambling for Content
Ever find yourself staring at your screen wondering what to post next? Having a collection of beautiful, on-brand images makes content creation a breeze. You’ll always have fresh, engaging visuals ready for your social media, website updates, and marketing materials.
5. It’s Totally a Business Write-Off!
Here’s the fun part—you can expense your branding photo session! Yep, it’s considered a marketing expense, which means it’s a legit business write-off. You get stunning images AND a little tax break. (Just be sure to double-check with your accountant!)
6. Tell Your Story, Your Way
Your story is worth sharing. Whether it’s how you started, the passion that drives you, or the impact you’re making—branding photos help you share that journey in a way words just can’t. They bring your story to life with energy and emotion.
Ready to Show Up and Stand Out?
Investing in professional branding photography isn’t just about getting great photos—it’s about building your brand with confidence and authenticity. Plus, it’s a write-off. Win-win!

After seven months of intense treatments, four rounds of chemo, four surgeries, and countless appointments, she has reached her one-year milestone of being cancer-free. And what an honor to documenting this moment!
I love sharing stories through photos—the highs, the lows, and the in-between moments that shape us. But this wasn’t just about a milestone, but a battle fought, a victory won, and the hope and gratitude that came with it.
Her strength, resilience, and unapologetic celebration of life is nothing short of inspiring. She was incredibly open about the highs and lows of her journey, and you should definitely check it out on her instagram, @Kimbermeer
This is her cancerversary—a time to celebrate every sweet bite of life (literally and figuratively).
Here's to capturing more stories that remind us how precious life is.
