How to Create Real Moments During Your Family Session

September 29, 2025 Ginny Thomas

When most people think of family photos, they picture everyone lined up, smiling at the camera, and hoping the kids will sit still long enough to make it work.

And yes, we’ll always make time for the "everyone looking" photo. But those aren’t usually the ones that end up framed.

The images you’ll keep forever are the ones where your little one is cracking up in a tickle fight. Where you’re snuggling your toddler while they twirl your hair. Where nobody’s looking at the camera at all.

Those are the moments that feel like your family.

Here’s how we make that happen during your session:

  1. Play a Game We start with play. It’s the fastest way to loosen up and connect. Games like running toward the camera, a tickle fight, or whispering something silly in each other’s ear change the energy fast. No more "cheese," just real smiles.

  2. Keep Moving Standing still and waiting for a photo feels awkward. Especially for kids. That’s why I’ll have you walk, spin, twirl, or dance. Movement relaxes everyone and brings out those real, in-between expressions.

  3. Snuggle In Some of the sweetest photos happen when everyone’s piled together. When little hands are tangled in your shirt and a kiddo climbs into your lap, that closeness brings out natural affection.

  4. Forget the Camera You don’t have to perform. Actually, I hope you won’t. Let the kids be silly. Talk to each other. Hug, joke, relax. The more you forget I’m there, the more real your photos will be.

Your family session isn’t about looking perfect. It’s about telling your story as it is, right now.

And these in-between moments are the ones you’ll come back to year after year.

Playing and having fun in the moment are sometimes some of my favorite pics from a session. Don't forget to just enjoy one another and let that unfold in front of the camera!

Happy Halloween from the strongest, coolest Hulk - don't mess when he's mad! 🤣😮😱
I love that his school still does the traditional Halloween parade!
A different type of session...

As the days get colder and home feels a little cozier, there’s something special about capturing your family as you truly are.

Documentary sessions tell the full story: the chaos, the cute, and the not-so-cute.
Brooks and Bo did everything but sit still.
They ran. They laughed. They took turns running away from me.
And we captured the sweetest little moments in between.

This fall session at Rock Creek Park had all the energy and all the heart.
Because real
Back in March, I was part of an event that offered free headshots for federal employees. One of the women who came in was Seema.

Just last week I got to photograph her family and their sweet pup. One of her boys is in his senior year, preparing for
A golden fall day.
Two joyful kids.

We explored Seneca Creek with this sweet crew, and loved the giggles, snuggles and so many little moments that tell the real story of this season in their lives.

No stiff posing. No rushing.
Just connection, move
The constant eating now seems to make a lot more sense…😳
If you’ve ever tried taking photos with an almost two-year-old, you know exactly how this goes 😅

This little one had big feelings about being photographed, and that’s completely okay. Instead of trying to get her to sit still or smile o
Studio minis are the perfect mix of cozy and festive; especially for little ones. Short sessions. Warm space. And all the snuggles and twinkle lights.

This little guy brought all the smiles and charm to his session. The holidays are coming!! 🎄
