Bringing a new baby into the world is so precious and SO much to think about —and capturing these early days through photography is so important, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. To make your newborn session as relaxed and joyful as possible, here are some helpful tips to guide you through the process.
1. Timing is Everything
While it is true that the itty-bitty newborns photos are best within the first 2-3 weeks after birth because they are sleepy and tiny, do not stress that it HAS to be during that time. The best time? The time when you feel ready. You can’t predict your recovery, how you are going to feel, how soon you are going to want to be in front of the camera…..so don’t push if the timing if it’s not right.
The lifestyle newborn session can take place anytime between the first 0-4 months. There are pros and cons to earlier vs. later, but the most important thing is capturing your baby. (I promise they are cute at every stage!) I personally didn’t do newborn photos with my son until he was 3 months old because that was right for us. Do what works for you. If you push it, it will be stressful and not enjoyable. No good for anyone!
2. Preparing Your Home
Since lifestyle newborn sessions often take place in your home, a little preparation can go a long way in creating beautiful backdrops:
Natural Lighting: Open curtains and blinds to let in as much natural light as possible—soft, natural light creates timeless and cozy images. I’m looking for the place with the most natural light in your house. A bedroom typically works well to get everyone on the bed together.
Declutter Key Spaces: Please don’t stress about cleaning your whole house. Focus on those rooms with good natural light and place we’ll probably use like the nursery, living room, or master bedroom. We' can strategically move things as necessary, so trust me to help you in the moment. :)
3. Choosing the RIGht Wardrobe
The most important thing is to feel comfortable in what you where. Your body has been through a lot, so be kind to yourself and don’t try to get into anything that you’re not ready for. If you’re uncomfortable, it will show. Choose comfortable, cozy outfits that allow you to move freely and interact naturally with your baby. Avoid bold prints and loud patterns that might distract from the tender moments we're capturing. Opt for soft, neutral colors—whites, creams, and pastels if you want to create a calm and classic look.
4. Including Siblings
Big brothers and sisters are a special part of your family and they need to feel important and included. Talk to older siblings before the session to help them understand what to expect. We’ll try to do all the photos with them first, and then let them be released and focus on just baby and parents. Having some favorite toys or snacks nearby and allow for breaks is good to keep them happy and engaged.
And pet siblings are welcome too!
