5 Tips for the Best Photography Christmas Mini Sessions

The holiday season has a way of sneaking up on all of us. One minute it's back-to-school season, and the next you're realizing it's time to order Christmas cards.

That's one of the reasons photography Christmas mini sessions have become such a popular tradition. They're quick, fun, and an easy way to capture beautiful family photos before the holiday rush begins.

A little planning can make a big difference, so here are five simple tips to help you get the most out of your Christmas mini session.

1. Choose Outfits That Complement the Set

The goal is for your family to stand out, not your clothing.

Solid colors and subtle textures always photograph beautifully. Cream, ivory, forest green, burgundy, navy, camel, and soft plaids are all great choices for Christmas photos. Rather than matching exactly, coordinate your colors so everyone feels like they belong together.

Christmas pajamas can also be a wonderful option, especially if they're classic rather than overly busy. Matching family pajamas create a relaxed, playful feel that's perfect for families with young children.

A few things I'd avoid:

  • Large logos

  • Neon colors

  • Busy graphics

  • Everyone wearing the exact same color from head to toe

Simple outfits keep the focus where it belongs: on your family.

2. Consider Professional Hair and Makeup

This is one of my favorite ways to help moms feel confident in front of the camera.

My talented hair and makeup artist, Valerie Hammer, is located just around the corner from my studio, making it easy to schedule an appointment before your session. Professional hair and makeup doesn't have to look dramatic. The goal is simply to help you feel polished, refreshed, and camera-ready.

When you feel good, it shows in your photos.

3. Let Kids Be Kids

The happiest photos rarely come from asking children to smile over and over.

Instead, let them play, snuggle, laugh, and interact naturally. I'll guide the session so we capture both those classic "everyone looking at the camera" portraits and the candid moments that often become family favorites.

If your child needs a minute to warm up, that's completely okay. Some of the best images happen in between poses.

4. Arrive Relaxed Instead of Rushed

A few extra minutes can completely change how a session feels.

Try to arrive early enough that everyone has time to settle in before we begin. Having snacks beforehand, planning outfits the night before, and avoiding scheduling too many activities on the same day can make a big difference, especially for younger children.

Christmas mini sessions are only 15 minutes long, so starting relaxed helps us make the most of every minute.

5. Remember Why You're Here

Most people book because they need a Christmas card photo.

Years from now, though, you probably won't be thinking about the card.

You'll notice how little your kids looked, the way they reached for your hand, or how everyone laughed together during those few minutes in the studio. Those are the moments that make these photographs worth coming back to year after year.
