Holiday moments come and go fast, but with a few simple tips, you can use your phone to capture the fun, the energy and the cozy little scenes happening all around you. These ideas keep things light, practical and stress free so you can focus on what matters most: being together.
Chase the Light, Not the Perfect Pose
The best holiday photos often happen when everyone’s just hanging out by the tree or gathered around the dinner table. Look for natural light—like a big window—and let that light do the hard work for you. No need to line everyone up perfectly. Just let the moment unfold.
Candid is King (or Queen!)
Instead of asking everyone to say “cheese,” try snapping a few photos while the kids are laughing over a goofy gift or Grandma’s telling a funny story. Those real, unposed moments are the ones you’ll treasure.
Get on Their Level
For little ones, squat down or even sit on the floor to take a photo. Seeing the holiday world from their point of view makes the picture feel a lot more personal and fun.
Use Burst Mode for Action Shots
If your phone has a burst mode, turn it on when the kids are opening presents or everyone’s having a dance-off in the living room. You’ll get a series of shots to choose from, and it’s a great way to catch the in-between moments that really show the fun.
Don’t Stress About Perfection
Some of the best holiday photos have a little chaos in them. If the dog jumps into the frame or someone’s wearing a silly hat, let it happen. Those imperfect moments often end up being the ones that make you smile the most later on.
A Quick Makeup Tip for the Festive Glow

Check out her blog for some easy, festive makeup tips that’ll have everyone feeling a bit more photo-ready. And regardless of your makeup state, don’t be afraid to BE in the photo. In 20 years, your kids will want to see you in their lives, and won’t care how together you are.
Edit Lightly, If at All
Finally, if you want to tweak your photos, just use a simple editing app on your phone (I like Snapseed) to brighten things up or add a little warmth. But don’t overthink it; these are your family’s memories, and they’re perfect just as they are.
And most importantly, enjoy the season.
Don’t just document it. Be present and make the memories!
Fall Mini Sessions at Fort C.F. Smith Park
A look back at our beautiful fall mini sessions in Arlington, VA, at Fort C.F. Smith Park—featuring golden light, genuine smiles, and one of the best weather days we've had all season.
The Fort C.F. Smith mini sessions turned out better than we could have asked for. We had to reschedule because of rain in the forecast the previous weekend (that never happened….) Still, it worked out. The new date gave us one of the most beautiful fall mornings.
The light was soft and glowy. The breeze was light. Everyone showed up ready to go and the kids brought their A-game.
Every family brought something fun to their session. Lots of laughs, sibling silliness, and sweet little moments in between. And even a little puppy! These mini sessions move fast, but we still get a great mix of posed and candid shots. You’d be surprised what we can get in 15 minutes.
And yes, we got those holiday card photos. But also the ones where kids are being goofy or snuggling with mom or chasing bubbles. Those are the ones you’ll keep coming back to.
Thanks to everyone who stuck with me through the reschedule. It ended up being one of my favorite days this fall.

Some photo sessions just feel like a warm hug—and this sweet Mommy and Me session with Naomi and her daughter Clara was exactly that.
We moved quickly through the session and managed to capture a whole collection of sweet, loving, joy-filled moments between this amazing mama and her little girl.
I’m a big believer that a Mommy and Me session doesn’t need to be overly styled or perfectly posed. It’s all about connection—those in-between snuggles, tiny fingers wrapped around mom’s hand, or a shared laugh over something only the two of them understand.
