A Spring Evening with a Growing Family | Bon Air Rose Garden Family Session
There are families you photograph once, and then there are families who become part of the story of your business.
As a family photographer Marylandfamilies return to over the years, one of my favorite things is getting to see life unfold. Babies become big kids, siblings are added, personalities change, and somehow parents still manage to look exactly the same.
This spring, I got to reconnect with a family I first photographed almost eight years ago when their oldest son was a newborn. Walking into this session and seeing him about to turn eight felt a little surreal. In the years between, their family has grown, and now they have four kids, including the newest addition, baby Juniper.
First of all, Juniper is one of my favorite names I've heard in a long time.
Second, this baby could not have been happier if we had planned it.
We met at Bon Air Rose Garden in Arlington, Virginia, on one of those perfect late spring and early summer afternoons that photographers quietly hope for all season. The gardens were in bloom, the light was soft, and the entire family showed up ready to enjoy the experience instead of worrying about making every moment perfect.
That combination always works.
The Best Family Sessions Aren't About Perfect Behavior
People sometimes worry that adding another child to the family means photos will become more stressful. Four kids can sound like a lot.
But what I've found over the years is that bigger families often settle into their own rhythm. The older siblings help the younger ones, parents know when to lean into the chaos, and everyone understands that the best photos usually happen in between the posed moments.
Juniper was all smiles, completely content to be passed from one set of arms to another, while his older siblings loved showing off their newest family member.
Some of my favorite images from the evening came from those little interactions that couldn't have been planned. A quick hug, a shared laugh, kids piling together, and parents stepping back for a second to watch it all happen.
Those are the moments that tell the real story.
Why Returning Families Mean So Much
One of the unexpected parts of being a photographer is becoming a small witness to people's lives.
When I photographed this family's oldest child as a newborn, none of us knew what the next eight years would look like. Now here we are with a family of six, another adorable baby, and a gallery full of images that connect one chapter to the next.
I love that family photography creates a timeline. A newborn session becomes toddler pictures. Toddler pictures become family portraits. Before you know it, you're looking back at years of memories that fit together.
It's one of the reasons I always encourage families not to wait for the "perfect" season of life. The season you're in right now is worth remembering.
A Beautiful Afternoon at Bon Air Rose Garden
Bon Air Rose Garden is one of those locations that feels timeless. The gardens provide plenty of variety without requiring families to walk long distances, and when the flowers are blooming, it creates a colorful backdrop without taking attention away from the people in the photographs.
For families with young children or babies, it's also a relaxed setting where everyone has room to move around and simply be together.
This session was full of that easy energy. No rushing, no forcing smiles, just a family enjoying an evening together with their newest little one.
And I have to admit, I left this session feeling really excited about the images. We created so many photographs that feel natural, connected, and true to this stage of their lives.
Thinking About Updating Your Family Photos?
If it's been a few years since your last family session, you're not alone. Life gets busy, kids grow quickly, and somehow time keeps moving.
The good news is that family photos don't have to be complicated. The best sessions happen when everyone comes ready to spend time together and lets the moments unfold naturally.
Whether you're celebrating a brand-new baby, a growing family, or simply want to remember this season before it changes again, those everyday connections are always worth documenting.
And if you happen to have a baby as cheerful as Juniper, that's a pretty nice bonus too.
